Research: Solid-state devices and materials engineered at the molecular scale.

My research investigates new optical and electrical devices. The device goals range from increasing the capacity or function of information technology systems to detecting biochemical molecules to producing new power sources. Studies of new materials and nano structures underpin the device aims; for example, changing the geometry of a silicon nanowire changes the color of light emitted. Most of these devices and materials look ahead to the increasingly integrated micro and nano systems expected to emerge over the coming decades. In a Materials Science & Engineering Department, these research topics typically fall within the fields of electronic materials or optical materials; in an Electrical & Computer Engineering Department within the fields of solid state engineering, microelectronics, or photonics.

  • Current research project areas:
  • Solid state terahertz waveguide devices
  • Microfabricated fuel cells and systems
